Penn State Football’s James Franklin Talks “Slippery Slope”; Caitlin Clark Seeks Record

Penn State Nittany Lions football coach James Franklin talked about the state of college athletics today and says we’ve slid down a slippery slope and it needs to be fixed. The current situation cannot remain the same. Otherwise coaches are going to leave the sport for simpler jobs in the NFL, or head coaches like Chip Kelly will leave their jobs for coordinator jobs when they burn out.

James Franklin also talked about how NIL and transfer portal access has gone too far and is harming the student athletes long term. He is glad the Big Ten and SEC are joining forces to come up with solutions to these problems. We have some thoughts on Franklin’s comments as well.

Tonight is the night (most likely) that Iowa’s Caitlin Clark becomes the NCAA women’s all-time leading scorer as the Hawkeyes host Michigan. The game should be an instant classic.

In men’s basketball, Ohio State fired coach Chris Holtmann after dropping their 17th straight road game. And Michigan coach Juwan Howard seemed to receive a vote of confidence from athletic director Warde Manuel. Manuel says he has not considered making a change with his basketball coach despite the fact they have struggled for two seasons now.

On Thursdays, we highlight any Big Ten Classics and Live programming coming up this weekend on the Big 10 Network. We have a lot of basketball scheduled as the season is in full crunch-time mode for those with post-season aspirations. All of that and more is coming up on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon.
