Can Matt Painter Survive if Purdue Boilermakers Bounce Early?

Purdue Boilermakers basketball coach Matt Painter wins games. He wins a lot! In fact, his Purdue Boilermakers just won their second consecutive outright Big 10 regular season championship. Matt Painter and his Boilermakers are shoo-in to land a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament later this month. But Purdue basketball has a problem. Neither Painter or Gene Keady have hung a national championship banner in Mackey Arena. This is despite the fact Purdue Basketball is really good almost every year. So, what’s the problem? It’s hard to say. The Boilers lost to double digit seeds three years in a row in the NCAA Tournament. Who could forget last year when the Boilers became just the second top seed to lose to a sixteen seed in NCAA history when Fairleigh Dickinson shot them out of the gym? At what point does coming up short every year start to become a problem for Painter’s longevity in West Lafayette? For the record, we think he is a great coach who is Purdue through and through! But at some point the tough question has to be asked.
