The Michigan State Spartans hiring Urban Meyer as their next football coach was the hottest rumor in college football this week. It even distracted the media from its usual drumbeat talking points about Deion Sanders and Taylor Swift.
Urban Meyer has won everywhere he has coached (in college) and Michigan State is in a bit of a jam since firing Mel Tucker. Beginning next year, the Spartans will no longer have to deal with the Big 3 – the Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions. They will also have to contend with the USC Trojans, the UCLA Bruins, Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies.
This presents a binary choice for Michigan State: Hire a big time successful coach or get buried into perpetual mediocrity within the Big 10 standings.
