The Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes defenses are elite. Not only are they the best in the Big 10 but they are among the best in the country. And they are not alone. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Maryland Terps, Iowa Hawkeyes and Wisconsin Badgers all give up less than 20 points per game. We’d argue that the Minnesota Gophers and Nebraska Cornhuskers have had their moments on defense as well. The data proves it: The Big 10 is the best defensive conference in the country. But in the day of high-powered offenses, do great defenses matter when it comes to college football playoff games against fine-tuned offenses from other Power 5 conferences? Big 10 teams with great defenses have given up a ton of points in the playoffs. The old saying was, “Defenses win Championships.” Do they? We will explore the question if the conference defenses are elite.
Meanwhile, Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers are struggling on offense. The school fired offensive coordinator Walt Bell and replaced him with former Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey. The Hoosiers are on their bye week but face the Michigan Wolverines next at the Big House.
